Cantina Happy Hour

Cantinas have a special place in Mexican culture, and of course, Oaxaca has its fair share of them! Each week we do a happy hour at one of the city’s cantinas where students can come out cervezas and conversations! But we’ll insist that the conversations are in Spanish.

Short City Tour: La Central de Abastos

All of our tours focus on trying to give you a slice of Oaxaca —whether its its art, history, culture, neighborhoods, architecture, or its marketplaces—we strive to help our visitors meet the “real” Oaxaca. The tour is aimed at all language levels of Spanish, from beginner to expert.

This tour is to the Central de Abastos—where all the food comes into the city, and houses as well many other types of businesses, from charcoal stoves to bootleg films to used clothes. It is also the transportation hub of the city, making it a center point of many things in Oaxaca.

COST: 150MXN (Student rates available—please inquire).

**Locals say its dangerous, and you should definitely use caution. That’s why we recommend only bringing what you need with you and leaving any valuables at home. But we will go in the daytime, when it is significantly safer.**

Urban Explorations: Pilgramage to Monte Albán

There are many places offering trips to the magnificent Monte Albán—one of the earliest Mesoamerican cities and the social, economic and political center of the Zapotec culture—but none quite like ours. This one starts in the downtown and walks through the neighboring township, San Martín Mexicapan. Your guide is a teacher who is from San Martín, who will lead you through the area, passing by important community spaces to a trail that climbs the hill to reach Monte Albán. Once you reach the site, you are free to explore it or return back to the city by bus.

Price: $425MXN (Student rates available $17USD).

**We recommend not bringing anything valuable with you on the trip and only a little money for entrance to the site, breakfast, and a bus ride down.**
