¡Bienvenidxs a La Guarida!

After working for years in Spanish language schools in the city, we decided to band together to form our own language program in order to use our collective expertise to offer all interested students an engaging, effective Spanish curriculum in a community-oriented learning environment!

Learning That Works

Small groups
Classes are intentionally small (maximum 5 students, usually around 3), so everyone has time to speak and participate.

We prioritize real communication so you can start using Spanish from the very beginning.

Personalized attention
We take time to understand your goals and help you improve what you actually need.

Beyond the Classroom:
Culture & Community

We know that students learn Spanish through many channels, and while dedicated to teaching the language, we also work hard to provide excellent classes in the cultural arts—like literature & idiomatic language, history, and art—to help the world better understand Oaxacan, Mexican and Latin-American culture, and offer a weekly standing workshop, called Playful Spanish, which ranges in daily themes, from Mexican Slang 101 to Inclusive & Queer Spanish.

Similarly, for this reason, we also take students on unique city tours events and workshops in our space, and direct our students to other art workshops, institutions, and events in the city so that they can get to know Oaxaca and get more incorporated into the cultural and social rhythms of the city. We also can connect student with homestay options, for those who want to get to know the city by living with Oaxacans themselves, and online class options for folks who want to continue learning from home.

Cultural Events & Community Workshops

An older woman standing against a worn, pink-colored wall with peeling paint. She is wearing a white outfit, glasses, and a red beaded necklace, with her hands in her pockets. There is a window to her right and a doorway to her left, leading into an art gallery with paintings and a potted plant visible inside.

We are working to make sure that our space, in addition to being home to a language school, also serves a cultural space for community events, such as photo exhibits, book readings, movie nights, etc. Additionally, we are working with others who would like to use the space to hold art workshops for the whole community. These events and workshops will be held in Spanish. We invite all students to participate in these workshop and events — as both are great forums for interacting in Spanish and learning in a different context, and participating more fully in the community. Your teachers can briefly prep you for the events, so you’ll have some context going into them.
